Cannot get ACX check plug in

Post by sdmc3 » Thu Mar 28, 2019 8:08 pm

Hi I have the most updated version of the Audacity app and have downloaded both the LAME and FFmpeg plug ins and they're both available in my Libraries. When I go to download the ACX check plug in, it first says "There is no application set to open the document “Acx-check(7).ny” " then "Search the App Store for an application that can open this document, or choose an existing application on your computer." So I choose an application, enable all applications, choose Audacity and then Audacity gives me an error message saying it does not recognize the type of file, try downloading FFmpeg (which I did) and also says for uncompressed files also try File > Import > Raw Data. I don't know what I need to do at this point and am not seeing anything on the download wiki that would offer up any other information. If you could walk me through how to get the plug in, that would be amazing.

Attached is ACX-check Release 1.0. I think that's current.

Don't leave out the little squiggly line (Tilde).

audacity (lower case intentional) > Plugins. Dump the Acx-check.ny file in there.

Audacity > Analyze > Add/Remove Plugins.

Note you can mess up ACX Check by not having enough background sound to measure for noise. ACX Check needs at least 3/4 second of pure background sound with no talking, shuffling, breathing, or other human sounds.

If it can't find enough clean noise to measure, it will measure whatever trash it can find, give you a stupid high reading. The world will not end. You just used ACX Check wrong.

Also note everybody fails ACX Noise. The specification is -60dB or quieter. In English, that means the sound behind your voice needs to be 1000 times quieter than your voice. Most homes and apartments can't do that.

Thank you for that walk-through! The only thing is, when I dumped the acx-check.ny app into that folder under library/application support, it seemed to be able to sit there, but then the acx-check wouldn’t show up under “add/remove plugins’, and there doesn’t seem to be a search option. So that’s where I’m stuck at the moment.

Analyze > Add/Remove Plugins, not Effect > Add/Remove Plugins.

There's two.

And it's squiggly line slash Library, not regular slash library.

It's a lot easier to just use the "Nyquist Plug-in Installer" to copy the plug-in to the right location.
This is the recommended way to install Nyquist plug-in for macOS: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/ins ... st_install

What happens if you use the Effect installer for ACX Check?

Same as any other Nyquist plug-in. It copies the plug-in file to the "per user" plug-in folder. You would then enable it in the Plug-in Manager.

The main benefits of the installer are:
1) You don't need to manually navigate to a hidden folder.
2) It will get the correct folder.
3) If Safari has added ".txt" to the file name, it will correct it.
4) The instructions are the same on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Full details of the plug-in installer can be found here: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/nyq ... aller.html
