If I record an internet show lasting several hours, then click on the Fit Project to Width button, after a second or two, I'll get a Not Responsive message - in parenthesis, at the top of the screen, just to the right of Audacity - and things are grayed out. The recording window is 20 seconds wide.
If I had been playing a portion of the file before clicking on Fit Project, the audio will continue to play perfectly, even though everything else is grayed out. After 30 or so seconds, the Not Responsive message goes away and everything works as normal.
This has been a problem with earlier versions of Audacity and continues right up to 2.3.0. I'm using Windows 8.1 Professional (x64). Host: MME. Playback Device: Speakers. Recording Device: Stereo Mix. 44.1 KHz, 32-bit float, High quality Real-time Conversion, Dither, none.

Re: Not Responsive
I can't reproduce this on my W10 laptop with either 2.3.0 or the alpha test build for the upcoming 2.3.1
1) Import a one-hour stereo track
2) Effect > Repeat to make 23 repeats
3) Fit Project to screen
4) the full 24 hours displays almost immediately.
Admittedly I do have a hi-spec HP Envy with a fast processor and an SSD
I regularly work on a two-hour show that I record - on my old laptop with a slower processor and a spinning metal disk I did find it took a while at times to fit the project to the screen, but no error or warning messages - but that issue totally went away when I got the new PC.

Re: Not Responsive
For a recording that is hours long, it can take a little while for Audacity to recalculate the waveform graphics when zooming out for the first time, especially on older or low spec hardware (For a 5 hour stereo recording at 44100 Hz sample rate, there are over 1.5 billion sample points to process).
Audacity uses caching to minimise delays on subsequent zoom operations.
