There is no "edit metadata" option after I select "export".
What I see is the following:
Save as: name of my project
Where: I usually select the desktop
Format: AIFF (Apple) signed 16 bit PCM (but it doesn't matter what format I select)
Cancel Save (Grayed Out)
"Save" button in "export" dialogue box is grayed out

Re: "Save" button in "export" dialogue box is grayed out
I had stopped, wasn't in pause. HOWEVER, the problem has just been resolved and I fear the culprit was my own stupidity.
After hitting "export" the next page offers the "save as:" "where" and "format" options. The "where" option would immediately default to "audacity 1.3.6" and at this point the "save" button was grayed out. I was always playing with the "save as" choices and "format" choices when trying to fix the problem but never actually changed the "where" choices. I would normally choose
desktop for this category but never did. So this time I chose desktop and the save button turned blue. I could have chosen any other destination except the "audacity 1.3.6" and that would have worked as well.
Sometimes the brain isn't fully operational. Thanks for your advice however. I appreciate it and hope I didn't waste too much of your time.

There may still be something broken. Many installs will let you save work into the /Applications folder. If yours won't, it may be time to...

When ripping LPs, if I have too many letters in the album name template, SAVE will be grey'd out until I delete enough characters in the name.

That fixed it for me. It was a filename length issue. Shorter file name worked first time!
