Slow noise reduction on Linux

Hello all,

I have a Centrino class fanless mini-PC clocked at about 1.1 GHz, running Windows 10. Noise reduction of a 8 minute speech segment takes about 20 seconds.

I have a much more powerful PC running linux (details below). Noise reduction of the same segment takes two minutes. Is this expected
behaviour?

Audacity 3.1.2, build Nov 20, 2021
System
CPU i7-8700 CPU @3.2 GHz
RAM 32GiB, DDR @2133 MHz
Ubuntu 20.04 64-bit

I’m using an Intel i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz laptop with Xubuntu 20.04.

Applying Noise Reduction with Audacity 3.1.2 AppImage (64-bit):

8 mins mono, 44100 Hz sample rate: ~6 seconds
8 mins stereo, 44100 Hz sample rate: ~11 seconds

Hello Steve,

Version 3.0.3, AppImage, Noise reduction for 6 mins mono is 4 seconds. (i7-8700 at 3+ GHz).

Version 3.1.2, Noise reduction is 2 minutes.
Version 3.1.2 is from Flathub, which is the default installation source in Zorin 16.

So I downloaded the latest AppImage to compare.
Version 3.1.2 AppImage took 32 seconds.

Both 3.1.2 and Flatpacking appear to have slowed Noise Reduction down substantially.
I know, not a hugely scientific test, but sufficient for me to stick with 3.0.3.

Adrian

Thank you, Steve, for your comments and taking the time to research this.
AppImages themselves have issues. It takes 15s to open the AppImage.
I realise for a software provider it is attractive (I used to be a software developer myself).

I ended up installing the ubuntuhandbook1 PPA, which has Audacity 3.0.2. This appears to have everything functional that I depend on.
