Distortion on imported MP4 files (audio recordings) from android phone

These MP4 files play fine in VLC media player but I was hoping I could convert them to MP3 files on my computer. When I import them to Audacity the playback is totally garbled or partially garbled. Also if I delete the garbed part in a partially garbled file then some or all of what was not garbled becomes garbled. As if it takes Audacity a while to figure out the format and get the playback correct??? I am using Linux Mint cinnamon & Audacity 3.0.3-alpha-20210727

BTW I have used Audacity for years it is an awesome product thank you so very much for this excellent tool!

Does it still do that if you back out to Audacity 2.4.2?

I think the current version is Audacity 3.1.2.

Either may be worth a shot.

Thank you so very much for the advice. I used the audacity link to down load the lasted version 3.1.2 and it solved the problem. I usually just let the software manager download the new versions and I have heard they are conservative (lag) on the versions they recommend downloading.
