Audacity as a multi track player for play-along tracks.

I have been looking for a multi track player that would allow me to provide play-along tracks for students in such a way that they could solo or mute any instrument/track they choose. (With control over the tempo as well.) Several developers have started down this road but seem to have abandoned the project before it became fully featured and plug-n-play. Audacity is obviously much more than a simple player, but I wonder what others think of the practicality of using it that way. Assuming the students had Audacity, could I just save and share un-mixed project files (along with the data files)? Issues?
Thanks in advance for any input,
~Andrew

I think Audacity is limited to mono and stereo playback.

Koz: Thanks for your reply. If I have a multitrack project open in Audacity I can:

listen to all the tracks at once,
solo any one I’d like to listen more closely,
mute any individual track

Yes?
If so, the tricky part seems to be sharing the project as multitrack, not a mix.
