it's quite tricky because all of the proportions and spaces in the track window (including the Timeline) are interrelated.
If the target area for the vertical ruler is reduced widthways, then there's a gap between the right hand edge of that target area and the start of the track.
The start of the track can't be moved because that will move the Timeline.
The "gap" can't be left "empty" because then clicking in that gap will be equivalent to clicking in an empty space of the track window, and the track will lose its selection.

So the question is, what should happen in that gap? It can't be left as a "no-man's land". The behaviour must be defined.

I think the pointer in that null area should show the standard arrow and that clicking there should do nothing - like clicking in the empty space to right of Help Menu or to left of horizontal scrollbar should do nothing.

But I am not sure from your description if we can do that.

I think that should be possible, but it means adding a new rectangular area (the "dead" area) into the track rectangle. It's a bit like one of those puzzles where you have to slide tiles around within a frame, except that some of the tiles also affect things outside of the frame.

I presume that we could have this dead area in all track types?

I guess this enhancement would be fairly low priority?

All track types and I guess P4 would do.

I suppose that it's years too late to consider changing the UI but…

"Normally" a right click (on Windows) is reserved for bringing up a context menu; in the only application I know of which allows the right click to do something else there is a switch at the top of the context menu and in preferences to control the behavior.

I propose that we change the user interface:
1) ignore a left click
2) implement the right click to bring up a context menu with the first item being "revert to traditional behavior", the second item being an item which opens a dialog box allowing user numeric control of the vertical zoom level; and (optionally) a few handy zoom levels (optionally including) a few of the user's most recently selected zoom levels
3) implement <ctrl> <left click> as the current "zoom in" and <shift> <left click> as the current "zoom out" (optionally - maybe when we give the user the ability to modify mouse preferences - some kind of preference to control the modified behavior).

Rather than just transfer this to the Wiki>Pending_Feature_Requests page wher it aill lie dormant - is it worth writing a short Proposal or raise an enh entry in Bugzilla for this especillay given that it has overwhelming/unanimous support from QA ?

Yes, I think it's worth it. It's a "usability" issue so should be on Bugzilla, even if only P4.
