I moved the topic to "Adding Features" so we can count AndyCivil's vote (and anyone else's vote which has not already been counted) .

AndyCivil wrote:my vote would be for the following:
  • 1. Don't actually change the functionality at all, but make the buttons carry the correct icon.
  • 2. The "play from start" button should have a "play from start" icon on it.
  • 3. The "pause" button should switch to a "play" icon while in the paused state.
(Note that you wouldn't see two 'play' icons, because one is a 'play' icon and the other is a 'play from start' icon.)

ooh yes please +1

Or make the Stop button behavior switchable between current behavior and "Stop and Set Cursor" - controlled by a Preferences setting - default, of course, to be current behavior.
Peter already voted for a Stop and Set Cursor button, but not until now for the alternative of a Preference.

Ed has not voted before.

Andy, have you tried zooming to fit the entire half hour project in the Audacity Window (there is a Zoom to fit button in the Edit Toolbar). Then try using Timeline Quick-Play by clicking at various points in the timeline. I do this with one and two hour DJ Music shows and use this technique to lacate where the ads are so that I can remove them.

Seee Timeline Quick-Play in the Manual: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/timeline.html#tqp

Have you thought of dropping a temporary label to mark any such point or region of interest so that you can easily go back to it.

That's what I do with the use case above. I find the start of the ads and mark that as "ads" then find the end, mark that as "ads end" or just "end". Then I can zoom out alittle and easily select between the two temporary labels and delet the unwanted ads.

If it's a file like AndyCivil seems to be saying, it should be fitted when imported.
