Can I display a position line to Time bar from audio track
When I position the cursor in the time bar at the top, I get a green down arrow and a white line that shows the position in the Audio Track below.
What I would love to be able to do, is position the cursor in the Audio Track, and have that time positing line display up to the actual Time Bar, so I know exactly where in the track I am. There is probably a way, but I can't find it...
I'm not talking about the marker that appears when I click in the audio track, I mean the thin white line similar to that which appears when I position the cursor in the Time Bar at the top.

The editing cursor in the audio track does display in the Timeline, but not in all the tracks, unless all the tracks are selected.rachalmers wrote:When I position the cursor in the time bar at the top, I get a green down arrow and a white line that shows the position in the Audio Track below.

If you don't mind selecting all tracks, you can do COMMAND + SHIFT + K. to place the editing cursor in all tracks.
To have a non-selecting vertical line appear in all tracks at the position of the editing cursor is a feature request. Do you want to vote for that?

Re: Can I display a position line to Time bar from audio tra
Yes, I think so. I'm looking for that white line to display as I move the cursor in the track window, not selecting any position, just where ever the cursor appears to be, so that the line ( any colour actually ) also shows in the Timeline, and by its nature crosses any and all other tracks in the display. Which would be useful for lining up various segments as well, so I get an accurate idea of exactly where in the time line I have the cursor.
As it is, it's difficult to get an exact visual picture of where in the time line I want to make a mark..
I've cobbled an image together to show an example. I have moved the cursor to 2.5 seconds, and I can see that because the white line is dragging along with the cursor in the time line. ( or it would be if that was enabled ). It could probably be toggled on or off, and as well, it's actual position shown live in the Selection Start counter on the bottom of the display. That way, I would be able to position the cursor exactly on the right time for a start and end... something like that anyway.
But having that white vertical bar would be a real help.

It's just an idea. but I've found it extremely useful in other audio editing packages...
If I need to vote somewhere, then count it as voted ?

We store votes here http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Feature_Requests but you need an account to edit. I added your "vote" there - a few others want this too.
Suppose you have a clip on its own in one track and and you want to align that clip with the editing cursor in another track. All you really have to do is use UP or DOWN arrow to move a copy of the editing cursor into the track that has the clip you want to align. This method does not change the selectedness of the track.
I do think however that when you drag the clip to the editing cursor that we should snap the clip to the cursor by displaying the yellow vertical Boundary Snap Guide line when the clip is snapped. Do you want to vote for that too? As it is now, you have to add a label at the editing cursor then snap to the label.

Re: Can I display a position line to Time bar from audio tra
Hi Gale,
Thanks. You mean I need a Wiki Editing account? no matter, I can probably do that if needs be.
However, it's nice that I'm not the only one looking for a cursor marker line that extends up into the time line.
I'm not particularly worried about actually aligning editing markers etc, that's pretty well taken care of with the UP/DOWN arrows etc as you mention.
My particular need is to be able to see in real time, exactly where in time, in the time line my cursor currently is.
For example, in the image I uploaded just previously, say I'm moving my cursor to try and locate myself at 2.5 seconds in the time line, if that white bar is following my cursor, I can read it exactly in the time line. So if I want to cut out half a second I can move to 2.5, click the cursor, highlight back (following the cursor) to the 2 second mark, and hit delete. Done. and so on....
I know there are other options to do this already, but not as quickly I don't think. That movable white line - as with the Quick Play time marker - would be a real bonus.

I added my vote there too - this would be a useful addition to the toolboxGale Andrews wrote:We store votes here http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Feature_Requests but you need an account to edit. I added your "vote" there - a few others want this too.
