The scheme I proposed was not quite right. The tricky thing is to device a simple method for A/B switching that (a) also does something sensible if there are more than 2 tracks, and (b) can be escaped back to normal mode (all tracks playing). Ideally it should avoid the need to use the "alternative" shift+click operations.
How about this:
- Click the A/B solo button on track A to listen to track A.
- Click the "A/B solo" button on track B to listen to track B.
- Click the "A/B" solo button on track B to toggle between A and B.
In detail:
Depressing the "A/B solo" button, mutes all other tracks.
Releasing an "A/B solo" button (was down now up) unmutes any other tracks that have the "A/B solo" button down.
1) Click the "A/B solo" button on track A.
- Mutes all other tracks.
- The "A/B solo" button on track A is now down and the mute button is up. Plays
2) Click the "A/B solo" button on track B.
- The "A/B solo" button on track A is now down and the mute button is down. Is muted
- The "A/B solo" button on track B is now down and the mute button is up. Plays
3) Click the "A/B solo" button on track B again.
- The "A/B solo" button on track A is down and the mute button is now up. Plays.
- The "A/B solo" button on track B is now up and the mute button is down. Is muted.
3b) Click the "A/B solo" button on track B again.
- The "A/B solo" button on track A is down and the mute button is now down. Is muted.
- The "A/B solo" button on track B is now down and the mute button is up. Plays
Repeat steps 3 / 3b as required.
To escape from A/B comparison, set all "A/B solo" buttons up.
The complex case of A/B/C:
This is not so useful, but may occasionally be useful for comparing a mixed down track to a number of other tracks.
Plays
3) Click the "A/B solo" button on track C.
- The mute button on "A/B" tracks toggle.
- The "A/B solo" button on track A is down and the mute button is down. Is muted
- The "A/B solo" button on track B is down and the mute button is down. Is muted
- The "A/B solo" button on track C is down and the mute button is up. Plays
3b) Click the "A/B solo" button on track C again.
- The mute button on "A/B" tracks toggle.
- The "A/B solo" button on track A is down and the mute button is up. Plays
- The "A/B solo" button on track B is down and the mute button is up. Plays
- The "A/B solo" button on track C is up and the mute button is down. Is muted
