I haven't, but I will. Does it actually create an editable envelope on the target track?

Read the link. No. The editable envelope is in the effect dialogue (envelope points strictly draggable only, not click to place the point).

I'm afraid, Gale, that I can parse neither your reply nor the page quite well enough to be sure whether Auto Duck
- applies an envelope to each selected track, with the calculated envelope points in it and editable, or
- modifies the actual selected track audio, baking the calculated envelope into it unmodifiably
I really really hope it's the former, rather than the latter, but I suspect it's not.

You asked

and I answered

Auto Duck does not add envelope points to the track. The envelope is set by you in the AutoDuck dialogue then applied to the track.
Why don't you try it? You might find it less fiddly. However as I said, you have to drag envelope points in the AutoDuck dialogue - you cannot click to place a point. So you may not find it acceptable if you don't like dragging points.

I *prefer* dragging points. I just prefer them to react in the fashion I expect.
Am I correct in understanding that there can be multiple selected tracks which will be ducked, but only one unselected track which will act as the control -- that is: that I must drag all the segments of my announce onto a single track before running autoduck?
If not, if all unselected tracks are control, is mute respected on them?

Yes.
but if I'm wrong, you will try it and discover that I'm wrong, so I'm not sure why you are asking - why not just try it and find out?

Because inspection is rarely authoritative.
I'm a documentation guy; I think that everything we know about a program should be in the manual.
Also, because my followup question only made sense in context.

Fantastic, (and yes I agree that the manual should be comprehensive).
As you will no doubt appreciate, documenting Audacity is a huge task, so volunteers to help with the task are always welcome. Do you want to volunteer?

The first unselected track underneath the selected track(s) acts as the control track. I made that clearer in the Manual for the next 2.1.0 release of Audacity.

If you would like to volunteer, I can create an account for you on the Manual Wiki.
