Scrubbing

I was talking about scrubbing, or the lack of it, with some other users.

From http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Featu ... hest-rated :
Scrubbing: (68 votes) - one of:
Basic functionality: Drag playback position left/right while playing (no effect until drop), or just click to skip to new position. (29 votes) Common in audio players, for example Foobar. Allows to judge the end of (long) selections without having to play repeatedly. it would be nice to see it implemented how sony soundforge has it implemented with Keyboard Shortcuts to Toggle Timeline Scrub Mode JKL shuttle.

Audio reproduction while dragging/playing: (39 votes) Drag cursor back and forth across a particular point and hear the audio as a function of the direction and speed of the cursor. Allows to zero in on the beginning of a plosive syllable or other distinctive sound as an edit point. Precisely analogous to rocking the tape back and forth on the playback head of a recorder. Could also have a preset speed using Fast Forward/Rewind buttons.

There is a hotkey B for play to selection and various alternative means of improved navigation in Audacity 2.x. In particular, rapidly using repeated left or right arrow presses sound quite like reproduction while dragging, even though audio stops between arrow presses - see Navigation Tips.
I think this should be updated to mention that we do at least have control-click in audio tracks which does "click to skip to new position." That feature is not easily discoverable. It is not mentioned in Mouse preferences and I do not see any status bar message directing you to it.

OK I made a note about the Mouse Preferences.

I see no need to mention all the methods of faux scrubbing directly on the Feature Requests page. CTRL + click is mentioned on the Wiki page "Navigation Tips" which is linked to on Feature Requests.

"Navigation Tips" will be in the Manual from 2.0.6 onwards so there will be a redirect from Wiki or we can update the link on Feature Requests.

Thanks

Yes, but clicking to reposition is mentioned here as if it were a missing feature when in fact it exists. So, the description of the desirable new feature should be shorter.

OK, I tweaked the text, mentioning CTRL + click, and described part of the "basic" request as "just click a position bar to skip to new position".

I don't see CTRL + click or even click in the Timeline as replacing that request. It is not intuitive to click in the Timeline as if it was a "position bar" but then not be able to drag a "handle" on the bar.

Really we no longer have volunteers who have time to work on that Feature Requests page. There are a number of features on that page that actually are already implemented and should ideally be moved to the "Completed Features" page.

If you would like to help, feel free to ask for a Wiki account. ;)
