That makes sense, though I'm not keen on trying to shoehorn a lot of additional stuff into the track drop-down menu.

We currently only have 3 analyze tools "above the line" in the Analyze menu, so there is no shortage of space there.
Gale Andrews wrote:Would a Nyquist Analyze effect know if it did not need to reanalyse if called again?
No, but I don't think that the built in analyze tools can (currently) do that either.
If that information was made available to the "Effect" class (the base class for most effects), then it could also be made available to Nyquist.
Gale Andrews wrote:People have also requested file name/format information where a file was imported though that could be global (the file is in all tracks), per track (different files for each track) or composite (a track has more than one file).
I think it would be handy if 'file properties' were available through the File Import browser. I don't recall off-hand what the program was, but in another audio editor was a very useful "play" button, so that files could be previewed before importing.

Yes, though that's not what many people are asking for.

CoolEdit Pro had both a Play button and file properties in the file open dialogue.

I'm +1 on a Play button - are you? I already voted for file properties display after import.

Yes, +1 on a Play button, but I think I already voted for that.
I'd prefer file properties to be available before import.

Which isn't much of a problem on a windows platform. One can essentially use any of the context menu entries, such as play in..., media info pproperties and so on.
Just close the external application when you're done and the open dialog will still be there.
I use this often with the plot spectrum export. First, I do an export, press the button again and open the text file with notepad. Eventually, I delete the file--still in this dialog-- and return to audacity with two escapes.
I certainly do not want the properties to appear each time.

Can you do that from within the Audacity file browser dialog? That's what I'd like, so that I don't need to also navigate to the folder in the system file browser.

That's exactly the idea behind.
There are (on my system) 29 menu points in the context/right click menu, such as play in Foobar2000, media info, send to, WinRar etc.
A single key preview wouldn't be bad, I admit especially when the audioplayer is already launched and you want to keep the pause position of the file (e.g. an Audiobook) in the player.

Most users simply won't have media utilities installed, or realise you can right-click a file in the Audacity file browser, or realise you can right-click a column in the file browser and display file properties like bit rate and sample rate as extra columns.

Cool Edit had a checkbox to enable the file information display in the file browser or not, which is probably a good idea. Probably a checkbox in the browser to play the file on selection or not would be a good idea, as in Cool Edit.

It is very hard to know what the best way to display file properties after Audacity import would be, but it could be simply global, without any attempt to say which tracks contain these files.

I think I haven't. I've transferred the topic title and URL to PFR so I can sort it out later, and have archived this.
