Re: Regular Interval Region Labels

steve wrote:How about reducing the number of controls by combining "Label text", "Minimum number of digits in label", and "Begin numbering from:" into one text control?
I like that, but I think better to call it: "First label text" as subsequent labels will increment the number.
steve wrote:As we have text input for the "time" values, why not allow hours:min:seconds.milliseconds?
Probably too complicated for some. Stick with seconds for now. Type 4 plug-ins should have a proper "time" widget.
steve wrote:As we have text input for "Label interval" and "Number of Labels", why do we need the slider for "Number of Labels"?
No we don't.
An alternative to "Label placement value" could be "Label interval or number of labels" if we prefer to spell out the options.

"Length of labeled region" would probably fit better between "Label placement value" and "First label text".

"Adjust label interval to fit length" may need a third option to accommodate the removal of "Add final label".
It could become something like:
Label adjustment: [[Fit interval]] [Fit Labels] [Exact Interval]
(In the case of "Number of labels", "Exact Interval" would be the same as "Fit Interval" because the label interval is "exact".)

I did.
"Case 1" is the upper label track.
"Case 2" is the lower label track.

Forget about the "extra label", we don't need it. I'm proposing that the user enters the number of labels that they actually want. If they want 5 labels they enter "5", if they want 6 labels they enter "6", there will no longer be a need to enter "5 + Add final label".

An "interval is a space of time between events.
The "label interval" is the space from one label to the next.
In the case of region labels, the "label interval" will refer to the space from the start of one label to the start of the next. For a given "label interval", the start times of the labels will be in the same place regardless of label length, even if the label length is zero (a point label).
"Case 1" illustrates "label intervals" that fit fully and exactly into the selection.

In "Case 2" we are not interested in the "interval", just in the number of labels.
We asked to fit 3 labels into the selection and we have exactly 3 labels that precisely fit the selection.

You didn't (or for region labels).

The image above has two labels and a final label (under the meaning of the current scheme) and you say you want to get rid of the final label (which is of no value in that example, anyway).

Case 1:
You want the "label regions" to fit. [Fit interval]
3 labels.
No label at the end because the next label region would start and extend from the end of the selection.
Label Track "C1 Point" shows this with "point labels" (zero duration labels).
Label Track "C1 Region" shows this with "region labels" (duration greater than zero).

Case 2:
You want to fit 3 labels into the selection. [Fit Labels]
There is a label at the end because we are "fitting the labels" inside the selection.
Label Track "C2 Point" shows this with "point labels" (zero duration labels).
Label Track "C2 Region" shows this with "region labels" (duration greater than zero).

Forget about the "extra label", we don't need it.
We may not need it in most cases or at all but for discussing whatever features we want should exclude the extra label, for clarity.

As I said, to me that shows 2 labels in the selection with a final (extra) label. What use is it when I asked for three labels? :?

Label Placement method: Number of labels
Label Placement value: 10

Guess how many labels there will be.
For a real user, they can try it and probably will not be surprised when it creates 10 labels. Are you saying that you would be surprised by 10 labels?

Under the old (weird) scheme, yes you would have to specify 2 labels + one more.
Under the new scheme it is three labels.
Just looking at it, it is OBVIOUSLY 3 labels - they are even labeled 1, 2, 3 :o

I've changed that to:

Label placement method: [[Label interval]] [Number of labels]
Label interval or Number of labels: [ 60 ]

I've not yet changed the algorithm.
