I propose to archive this thread in the "In-Depth Feature Discussions Archive" section - and provide a link from Bugzilla to the thread - any naysayers?

Unfortunately none of the developers seems to be interested in this enhancement. If it had a bunch of votes requesting it, then that provides a bit of leverage for requesting developer attention. The wiki provides evidence that a feature has been requested by users.

For the record, this was committed in r12408.
