Hi
I use Audacity (ubuntu) to record my band via a netbook. After each number I have to save the project (browse, type), open a new project. the saving takes almost 2 minutes. navigation is time-consuming, also due to the touch pad.
It would be really handy to have a sort of auto-recording mode:
- Point a destination folder once
- Start recording, while the project/file is directly written to disk
- Stop recording
- Start recording just creates a new file 01, 02 etc
Save during recording

Re: Save during recording
There is a "features I would like added to Audacity" forum ... http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewforum.php?f=20
The capability to do this would depend on a computer's processor speed: some slower computers would interrupt one process for a significant period whilst performing the other, if the recording was interrupted by the saving it would ruin the recording by missing bits, (i.e. skipping )

Re: Save during recording
You would probably find it quicker if, when you open Audacity, you immediately save the empty project to its desired project name. Then do the recording and press Stop & CTRL+S to save at the end of the recordring. Repeat.
This way Audacity will not be using its temporary file area, insted it will write directly to your target project as it gos - the time consuming bit you are experiencing is almost certainly Audacity copying the data from its temp files to your project and then deleting the temp files.
This doesn't get rid of the navigation, but it should save you a bit of time.

Re: Save during recording
The second time you save a project it should open in the last used folder, so if you want to save the second project in nearly the same place there won't be so much browsing...
You can also make several recordings in the same project each at a different track. Then you can export each track separately as WAV. You can use the Export multiple to do it all at once. It's not very advisable you do this without saving however, because if a crash ocurrs you may loose it all...
Like wax suggested start by saving the project before starting to record, that way it will go in the desire folder instead of the temporary one, avoiding the need to copy it around at the end... It will also be more safe in the case of a crash. It's always good practice too to export, as a backup, the recorded track as WAV right after finishing recording.

Include as much details as you can in your post (Audacity version, Operating System, Equipment used, etc).
Please post your question in the appropriate forum (regarding audacity version and operating system).
