VST Instrument plugins

Post by somewhiteguy » Wed Oct 20, 2010 6:10 am

Just wondering if any future versions of audacity are going to support instrument plugins. Thanks

I've moved this topic to the "Adding Features" section.

I very much doubt that VSTi support will be added in the short or medium term (if ever). Audacity is not a "real-time" processing application - the only real-time thing that it does is play and record. To support VSTi would probably require a total rewrite of the core code and a paradigm shift in the way that Audacity works.

However, I'm aware that MIDI support is currently being developed, though I've no details about this. When Audacity is able to play and record MIDI data it should be possible to use Audacity in conjunction with a VSTi host application (use MIDI to play instruments in another host program).

Thanks for the fast reply! Out of curiosity what are the names of some of the programs that could host those plugins? And is it complicated to a computer illiterate person like myself to get them working together with audacity lol. Thanks

Audacity does not currently have MIDI support - it's being developed in the experimental branch but it's not done yet.
You may want to look at Reaper, Sonar, Cubase. There are many others, but these are the big names. Reaper has a particularly good trial version and very fair pricing.

After installing the VST plugin(s) into the Audacity plugin folder you should tick "Rescan VST effects next time Audacity is started",
in "Preferences" ("ctrl" + "p"), “effects“. Only then do the VST effect(s) you’ve added appear on the “Effect” drop-down menu.
