Problem in Multichannel Recording and playback system

Post by saviour2009 » Mon Feb 08, 2010 12:45 pm

Hi everybody.....i am using audacity for multichannel recording i.e. recording from more than one channel at a time and am using 1010LT Delta M-Audio card in my system. The problem that I am facing with audacity is that it is taking input from one channel and sending the same input to all channels but the output from all the channels is different. The audacity should show different waveforms on all the channels but it is showing the same waveform due to the above mentioned problem. Even while playing multichannel data audacity behaves ridiculously....all the 6 sounds should be played on different speakers in the case of a 5.1 multi-speaker surround sound system but except the first two sounds it plays all the sounds on the first speaker. I am in desperate need for some solution as I am involved in a project and am running short of time. Suggestions/advices are invited.

Audacity does not currently support multi-channel playback, though you can export multichannel files for playback in other applications.
Does that blow out using Audacity for doing this project or is it worth us discussing the multichannel record issues?

@steve......thanks for the info.....even I too had a doubt on audacity supporting multichannel playback....Can you suggest me some other software that can perform multichannel recording and playback the same file in a correct order...playing the corresponding channel input on the correct speaker. The recording feature of audacity is quite appreciable but I think what they have done is that they have first developed audacity for single channel and then replicated the channels to multiple ones. I am not sure about audacity being ruled out in future course of time but currently I am involved in multichannel recording issues and hence using it.

Sorry, the only multi-channel work that I've done was on Sonar, and that's big $s.

many of the popular DAWs with multiple versions (lite, home, advanced, pro) have at least one that can do multichannel

personally i looked at multi channel and then decided stereo was good enough for my home recording/playback. too much work, time, equipment, to do 5.1, 7.1, or n.1 (n> 8) type recording/playback just for me or even friends. Maybe if I produced a movie or TV show I might reconsider.

@saviour2009 - the trouble is that very few of the posters use multi-channel - I don't think any of the forum elves do for instance.

So essentiyll you are a pioneer in this area - that's why you're gettinmg so little response, sorry.

There are a few references to multi-channel in the Wiki - try a search there: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Audac ... _Home_Page
