Some amount of hiss is inevitable (even with the very best equipment set up to perfection).
The amount of hiss should be very small compared to the signal level. (this is called the "signal to noise ratio" or "SNR").

If the hiss seems to be excessive, check the levels. The "gain" on the umc22 needs to be high enough to give a good strong signal, and then the recording level in the Windows Sound Control Panel should be low enough to avoid distortion - you are aiming for a maximum peak level in the recording of about half the track height.

For a microphone, ensure that you use the 3 pin "XLR" connection (not a jack plug).

hi Steve-yes i agree with you some ammount of Hiss IS UNAVOIDABLE.however if you compare a tape with no noise reduction to one with noise reduction, the results are unmistakable.noise reduction has made all my tapes a treat to listen to.nothing is perfect----mickthefish.

If you have more questions, please post in the Help Forum http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewforum.php?f=45, in the board for whatever operating system you are using.

This makes it easier to give you a relevant answer.
