audaciy 2.01 version
i think the frequency smoothing option in the noise redfuction panel is fantastic.ive redone all my audio tapes & managed to remove 100% of artifacts, while still removing 90% of tape hiss & retaining the highs & lows frequencys.who needs dolby!!!!.

Re: audaciy 2.01 version
If you mean 2.0.1, that's old and nothing to do with the Noise Reduction in the current Audacity 2.1.0.mickthefish wrote:i think the frequency smoothing option in the noise redfuction panel is fantastic.ive redone all my audio tapes & managed to remove 100% of artifacts, while still removing 90% of tape hiss & retaining the highs & lows frequencys.who needs dolby!!!!.
If you meant 2.01 that is a bogus version not made by us.

Re: audaciy 2.01 version
I hope you mean version 2.1.0. If you meant that, tell us more about the exact settings you found useful, for all of the slider controls.

Re: audaciy 2.01 version
hi again paul.yes i did mean 2.1.0 version.the following are the nominal settings i use in NOISE REDUCTION for my audio & vinyl.SENSITIVITY 12:FREQUENCY SMOOTHING 4:I do not touch the NOISE REDUCTION slider which defaults at 10.If i detect any artifacts a slight tweaking on the SENSITIVITY slider usually fixes it.incidently the real time PREVIEW function is great.PS-i gave you the wrong settings the last time i wrote you-sorry-mik.
Re: audaciy 2.01 version
Can I ask, what setting do you use for Sensitivity? You say "slight tweaking" but I don't know what the number is. Thanks.mickthefish wrote:hi again paul.yes i did mean 2.1.0 version.the following are the nominal settings i use in NOISE REDUCTION for my audio & vinyl.SENSITIVITY 12:FREQUENCY SMOOTHING 4:I do not touch the NOISE REDUCTION slider which defaults at 10.If i detect any artifacts a slight tweaking on the SENSITIVITY slider usually fixes it.incidently the real time PREVIEW function is great.PS-i gave you the wrong settings the last time i wrote you-sorry-mik.

The settings are not prescriptive. You should set the sliders according to your actual noise profile and content. Have you read http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/no ... ction.html ?jsouza wrote:Can I ask, what setting do you use for Sensitivity? Re: audaciy 2.01 version
Yes, I have read the docs for the new feature and have tried various settings for different vinyl recordings, with a specific noise profile taken from noise from each recording for each trial, but thus far I have been unhappy with the results. mickthefish seems to be quite happy with general settings for all of his recordings and thus I was curious as to what his specific settings are. He does list them but isn't specific on what he means by "slight tweaking". Would this be one or two numbers up or down? Even though the settings are not prescriptive, I see nothing wrong with my being curious as to what his settings are.Gale Andrews wrote:The settings are not prescriptive. I don't know if mickthefish will see your question, but if you do need more help I suggest you attach your noise profile and a sample of audio you want to remove noise from. See How to post an audio sample.jsouza wrote:Yes, I have read the docs for the new feature and have tried various settings for different vinyl recordings, with a specific noise profile taken from noise from each recording for each trial, but thus far I have been unhappy with the results. mickthefish seems to be quite happy with general settings for all of his recordings and thus I was curious as to what his specific settings are. Re: audaciy 2.01 version
That can be dangerous if you're concentrating on the wrong thing. It's certainly possible to use Noise Reduction, pop removal, and associated filters to produce a quiet, well-behaved recording....that doesn't sound anything like the original.mickthefish seems to be quite happy with general settings for all of his recordings
ACX-AudioBook has a failure report called "Overprocessing," where a reader beats their performance black and blue to meet technical standards, but they sound like a ratty cellphone call. One of the hard parts of audio processing is knowing when to quit, or using just enough processing to suppress undesirable sounds and no more.
It's easier to get wrong than you think. A podcast based on a very popular broadcast radio show was posted with intros and outros added for promotion and commercial messages. The add-on segments had honky, talking-into-a-wine-glass multiple compression distortion and nobody caught it for weeks.

Re: audaciy 2.01 version
Thanks Koz.
I've found conservative settings (9/2/6) that seem to work well for most of my recordings from vinyl, and for my one recording that was becoming distorted after applying NR using these settings, it's clean enough that I have opted to not use NR for it.
