How does Audacity music editing compare to other systems?
How do you feel Audacity compares to other systems you have to buy, like Roxio or Nero?
Audio capture and basic track editing seems to work fine and is easy to get running.
What about the audio editing features (such as removing hiss, pops and clicks). Is it as effective of removing noise while keeping the full dynamic range of the music?

That's not editing. That's performance rescue, filtering and forensics. Different people and software tend to be good at those jobs.
What's the actual job? Are you transferring vinyl to DVD? Audacity has a very good section on how to do that including third party software. The next version of Audacity has a much better implementation of Noise Reduction than the current one.

mostly, I am digitizing LPs. I have a good turntable and a professional CD recorder.
Main issue is getting rid of crackles and pops without loosing the original sound quality. I also have tapes where I want to get rid of the hiss.

Roxio and Nero are primarily CD/DVD burning programs.kirmusicedit wrote:How do you feel Audacity compares to other systems you have to buy, like Roxio or Nero?
Audacity is a free, open source multi-track audio editor,
It's like comparing an apple with a fish.

There is a series of articles about that here: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/sa ... ation.htmlkirmusicedit wrote:mostly, I am digitizing LPs. I have a good turntable and a professional CD recorder.

I couldn't be happier! I do use Goldwave software (too), mainly because I'm more comfortable using it. And it does contain Lite Dynamic increase feature I like for early mastered CDs! Even on a slow, 11 year old laptop, I was able to mix 30 consecutive tracks with Audacity - that's pretty amazing!kirmusicedit wrote:How do you feel Audacity compares to other systems you have to buy, like Roxio or Nero?

That is incorrect. Roxio and Nero have tons of features besides just burning.steve wrote:Roxio and Nero are primarily CD/DVD burning programs.kirmusicedit wrote:How do you feel Audacity compares to other systems you have to buy, like Roxio or Nero?

Both Nero and Roxio have multi-track audio editors (that you pay for). That was my question....how does Audacity compare?
I have been using the Roxio sound editor for years, and it has greatly improved over the years.

The tool that I used when I digitized my LPs was Brian Davies' ClickRepair - it costs a little but produces almost magical results, rescuing many of my LPs that had effectively become unplayable (with any real enjoyment).kirmusicedit wrote: ... See this sticky thread: http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=1994
Audacity did all the rest of the job (apart from the CD burning).

Both "Roxio" and "Nero" are global companies that specialise in digital media creation.
Audacity is a free, open source multi-track audio editor,
(Also, Nero WaveEditor is now free)
