The end of the Phase Jump problem

Post by DickN » Mon Jun 02, 2014 8:15 pm

I was lax in updating to 2.0.5 Release version, but when my newer laptop (an Intel quad-core running Windows 7) showed a problem similar but not identical to http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... mp#p100444 when running 2.0.5 Alpha, I updated Audacity on that computer. Made me wish I'd done that a long time ago on both of my other systems, which includes the one that didn't have this problem. I've been running 2.0.5 Release (Oct 2013 build) long enough now to say with reasonable confidence that for the first time since rev 1.3.12, my Vista system (also on a quad-core processor, but AMD) does not exhibit this phenomenon.

I stated above that the manifestation on the new laptop was similar but not identical to the behavior detailed at length in the above-cited thread. The difference on the Win 7 laptop was that it coincided with disk writes (happened at multiples of 5.5 seconds but not every multiple), only happened when recording in stereo, and there were two settings (200 and 400 ms) of Audio to Buffer which seemed to prevent it. I say "seemed to" because I didn't do extensive testing although when it was happening, it happened at least a few times per minute. I didn't find any other settings for this parameter which would prevent it. Apart from these differences, the manifestation was identical to what I described back in August 2010 - audio was repeated or replaced with audio from nearby on the track, almost always from earlier. I found only one instance where it was replaced with audio from later. Both channels of a stereo pair were always affected identically. These observations are from spending a full week fixing them or making them inaudible in a roughly 90 minute recording.

Those little interrupts are where Audacity is writing a little packet of data to the project file. I had this problem on an earlier unreleased alpha version of Audacity on my W7 laptop - but the bug was fixed/reverted for the official 2.0.5 release.

It can also occur if you are overloading the comport by doing other stuff, particularly compute-intensive stuff, on the computer at the same time.

Or sometimes it can be caused if you have a virus checker that examines files as they are written, you may have a virus checker where you can tell it to "trust" certain file types (in Audacity's case *.aup and *.au files).

Registered Users did not have permission to edit their posts in this specific "Audacity 2.x Feedback and Reviews" board. I think I have fixed it (and for all boards in "Feedback and Discussion Forum"). Please test.

Yep, it works now (edited both posts 'cause I couldn't delete the second one). Thanks!

Reason: I deleted the second one for you :-)

Sorry about getting off-topic here, but still on the same tangent -- I don't see any 'Delete' buttons here, just 'Edit', 'Quote' and '!' in a triangle. FWIW I'm using Firefox 29.0.1.

The Delete button should be a square button with a grey "X" on it.

From the registered users I looked at, it seems that their own "User" Forum editing permissions are all set to "No". This conflicts with the "Group" Forum editing permissions which are (as intended) mostly set to "Yes" for Registered Users. I suppose it's a bug, as the phpBB documentation suggests to me that "Yes" should always override "No".

I changed your (DickN's) "User" Forum editing permissions to "Yes" for deleting your own posts. Can you now see a Delete button in your own posts?

Nope, no 'X'. I looked at another thread I'd posted to (http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 51#p236451) just to see what it looks like and there it was right next to 'Edit', but there's none here.

OK, there's one on the reply I just sent but not on my previous posts to this thread.

It disappeared again but there's one on the next (which was my last until this one) post. Looking back at http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 51#p236451 it appears I'm allowed to delete only my last post to a thread. That makes sense, but I didn't have the button on even my last post to this thread until now. Maybe it disappears also when someone replies to the post (even without quoting).
