Post by Studio 9 » Sat Mar 15, 2014 12:11 pm

Is it possible to make a short montage using Audacity.

I am trying to make one but haven't got a clue how to do it.

Be grateful for any advice thanks.

Yes, absolutely.
The basic procedure is to import the tracks (they appear one below the other as separate tracks). Use the Time Shift tool to slide them left/right as necessary. Trim them down as necessary and apply and effects or fades. Export your finished masterpiece as a WAV file (WAV is a high quality format that is compatible with just about everything).

See here for guidance on basic editing techniques: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/tu ... _file.html

If you installed Audacity with the recommended installer for Mac OS X or Windows, then the user manual will already be installed and available from the Audacity Help menu. There are quite a few tutorials listed top right of the front page of the manual.

If you have further specific questions, feel free to ask, but post on the Windows, Mac OS X or Linux board as appropriate so that we can give information that is relevant to your type of computer.

The forum "board index" is here: http://forum.audacityteam.org/index.php (also a link to "board index" at the top left of every forum page).

Hi I have tried with the time line shift which is working but I cant manage to get them all on the same line as one track.
Basically what I want to do is join up three short audio clips together on the same line I have tried to copy and paste but It won't work !

They don't need to be on the same track. When you export all of the tracks are "mixed down" to a single (mono or stereo) track.
If you specifically want them on the same track then you can drag them with the Time Shift tool but there has to be enough space in the track where you are dragging to.

It can be useful to keep them on separate tracks, then you can cross-fade them if you want (fade one track out overlapping another track that fades in). It is often easier to get the tracks to match up neatly if they are on separate tracks. It's up to you if you put them on the same track or not. Sometimes it is convenient to have some on the same track and some on separate tracks.

Glad you've got it all to work ;)

Thanks I am back to square 1 now ! When I tried making a montage the other day it was using small pieces of audio.
The tracks I have are quite long and will not fit on the timeline.
I have three separate tracks they are not to big maybe 30 seconds each and I want to join them all up to make a montage it's driving me mad !

Zoom out a bit so that you can see more of the time line: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/zooming.html

If you're using Audacity 2.0.5 there is also an option to align tracks "end to end" http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/tr ... html#align
You will need to select all of the tracks first before using that command. Ctrl+A will "select all".

Hi Thanks for all your help and advice I have managed to make montage at last.

I hope you don't mind me asking one more thing please would you be able to tell me how I can make the volume on each clip on the montage the same I have tried to normalise it but it hasn't worked.

The problem I have is that the first part the volume is ok then the last part the volume is very high !

Thanks very much.

This is one of the advantages of keeping each audio clip on a separate track. The "Gain" slider on the left end of the track allows you to adjust how loud the track plays. http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/au ... .html#gain
