How to use record hotkey in background?

Post by Mycelus » Tue Feb 11, 2014 8:50 am

I use OBS to record my gameplay, but my Audio Technica ATR2500 microphone picks up lots of background noise causing me to turn my volume down on the mic. So I use the noise isolate feature with Audacity to record audio, then stitch it into my gameplay with Sony Vegas (well, I plan on doing this, I haven't done it yet.)

So my question is, how do I go about getting the hotkeys to work while I'm ingame? Because right now OBS has background hotkeys, but Audacity doesn't work with this, and I'm looking for a practical solution to this problem.

Don't have background noise? These problems all go away if you record in a quiet room -- or with a close, high-quality headset microphone. There is another recent post from someone who claims you don't need a studio any more with proper application of Noise Removal. He hasn't actually tried it yet or he wouldn't have written the post.

I don't know of any way to control Audacity if Audacity isn't in the computer "focus." The hotkeys tend to follow focus.

Some microphones like aircraft type allow as-needed muting. That's another possibility.

The thing is I cannot go to another room, this is a desktop, and I do not have a laptop, nor can I afford one at the moment, so I can't really move the microphone away from the PC while sitting down to record.

OBS allows you to not have the window active and still record, kinda don't understand why Audacity won't allow this /=

Audacity doesn't have "global shortcuts" that work whatever application has focus. It's a feature request. The wxWidgets interface toolkit we use supports global shortcuts but only on Windows, so the developers won't be keen to add the support until it works on all platforms.

Well Windows is the majority platform, and features don't have to be rolled out to every platform on launch.

Wish this feature would be released...

If someone provided a patch for global shortcuts on Windows then a decision would have to be made about it. Linux developers have sometimes said that if the feature can't work on Linux then it should not be released, but yes Windows being our "majority platform" is a consideration.
