In about 15 years of experimenting with Linux off and on, I've never had a Linux installation that didn't eventually fold over on itself, and that encompasses many different distros. They have all eventually self-destructed, every one. Windows, OTOH, has kept on going and going and going ever since Windows 98. So robustness has to be taken into account as well as audio performance. Do some searching and you'll find countless sob stories of "my Linux DAW doesn't work any more". The only reason I'm messing with Linux this time around is because I thought it would be cool to try out a RTOS, which could potentially benefit a program I'm working on (coincidentally using PortAudio).
Suppose I arrived to record a live concert and it's the day my recording setup decided not to work. That would be unacceptable to say the very least.
ASIO is OK but WASAPI has its issues. I've had developers tell me WASAPI is very poorly documented, making it that much more difficult to write for.

. Of course it can get a bit precarious close to the bleeding edge of technology which is why I prefer to use "less glamorous" Linux distributions (such as Debian Stable) on production machines.
