I have Audacity 2.0.3 and tried the procedure for removing vocals from mp3 as suggested in You Tube. I wasn't successful, the vocals are still in there. Where did I go wrong?
Thanks for responding.

Vocal Removal fails way more often than it succeeds. The list of rules goes forever. If Vocal Removal completely failed, then you may be using a mono, not stereo show. Many on-line sound tracks are produced in mono to save space and speed up and downloads. The fact that it came out of both of your speakers means nothing. Mono automatically creates a split playback like that.
If the singer wasn't in the exact left-right center of a stereo show, Vocal Removal will fail.
High internet sound compression messes up Vocal Removal because of direction distortion, etc.
There's a joke that those YouTube training videos cherry-pick the song. You can get the same results they do by picking that exact same song.
I did a Vocal Removal on a Music CD I own and the results were pretty awful (and normal). This is after removal and then a little before.

Many karaoke tracks are available on YouTube and can be downloaded with an appropriate plug-in for Firefox web browser. Many more karaoke tracks are commercially available at low prices (try Amazon for example).
