I'm an experimental psych student and need two music files as stimuli.
One slowed by 50%, one increased 150%.
I also only want to save a selection of the music.

Is it possible to save a selection that's had its speed altered?

I understand the playback speed dial on the toolbars. .50 slows music down 50%. But when I go to the effect menu and try to change speed by 50%, the music isn't as slowed as when I used the playback dial. Can someone explain?

Not with Play-at-Speed. Use Effect > Change Speed (which changes the project's audio data on disk).
If you don't want to change the pitch when changing the speed, use Change Tempo instead.

Or add a Time Track , set a range then click once to set a constant speed change. This does not change the project's audio data on disk unless you Tracks > Mix and Render. This is like Effect > Change Speed (the pitch changes with the speed change).

Then you can File > Export Selection assuming your selection is already dragged in the track.

You want -50% in Effect > Change Speed or 50% in Time Track which is the same as 0.50x in Play-at-Speed. +50% in Change Speed or 150% in Time Track is the same as 1.50x in Play-at-Speed.
