Using Versions 2.0.2 & 1.2.6

Post by camtechman » Thu Sep 06, 2012 4:43 am

Why can't I run Audacity 1.2.6 (my present version) as well as Audacity 2.0.2 ? Thereby allowing me the option to choose which version to use.

There are some features on 1.2.6 that I prefer but on downloading the new 2.0.2 version, it replaced the 1.2.6 one.

You can have both - just override the default target directory for the instllation. (I have two old versions of 1.2 along with current releases and alpha test versions on my PCs). What you can't do is run two different versions of Audacity on the same computer at the same time.

You should be able to re-install 1.2.6 from the Legacy Downloads section of this page: http://audacityteam.org/download/

As a point of interest, which features are they?

Steve,

I prefer the layout and access to some the features but that's minor compared to this problem (as posted on another of my threads):

Thanks for that advice but, not being all that savy with computers, I don't know how to do that.

I went to install Audacity 2.0.2 and after it going through the first insallation steps: Language, License Agreement, etc it showed a panel where it showed where it would be saved to: C:ProgramFilesAudacity and at the side of that there was "Browse" tab.

When I clicked on the browse tab it gave lots of options but which of those do I save it to?

Cheers,

Tony

So now you've got 2.0.2 installed over 1.2.6 right.

So go to install 1.2.6 from the links I gave you - then when that pops up the save location as C:ProgramFilesAudacity just type 1.2.6 at the end of it

then you will 2.0.2 installed in C:ProgramFilesAudacity

and 1.2.6 installed in C:ProgramFilesAudacity 1.2.6

OK,

I've just installed Audacity 1.2.6 as instructed: C:ProgramFilesAudacity 1.2.6 and it overwrites the already installed Audacity 2.0.2.

So I've tried it the other way round, now that 1.2.6 is already installed. I then installed Audacity 2.0.2 and that then overwrites the 1.2.6 version.

I've even tried a clean install, uninstalling Audacity and then installing 1.2.6 as instructed: C:ProgramFilesAudacity 1.2.6 and then installing 2.0.2 as: C:ProgramFilesAudacity 2.0.2 and it still overwrites the other.

I've tried doing it the other way round, after doing an uninstall. C:ProgramFilesAudacity 2.0.2 first, followed by C:ProgramFilesAudacity 1.2.6 and the same thing happens in each case, one overwrites the other.

I've even tried adding a back slash in the command, i.e: C:ProgramFilesAudacity2.0.2 & C:ProgramFilesAudacity1. 2.6 and going trough the same process but one keeps overwriting the other.

My brain hurts....... :(

HOLD THE FRONT PAGE !!

I've overcome my problem.

Firstly the reason for wanting the option of having both versions on my system, as outlined in my previous post, was that I thought the new 2.0.2 version still carried the median line issue as did the 1.3 version.

I've now recorded some audio on the 2.0.2 version and the median line problem isn't there, so I'm happy to update to the 2.0.2 version as my sole source of Audacity.

Problem solved.

(Although it doesn't answer the "overwriting" issue but ..Hey...I'm not bothered now)

Many thanks for all your help, it's very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Tony

I'm afraid if you zoom in you will see the centre zero line is there. The only way not to see it is to use a Spectrogram view mode ( http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/tr ... pectrogram ) but you cannot see audio samples in that mode.

There should not be any overwriting if you install to different folders.

You can right-click over the installed 2.0.2 audacity.exe > Send to Desktop and create a shortcut to that version.

Do the same for 1.2.6, then launch the version you want by double-clicking its shortcut on the Desktop.

Hi Gale,

Therein lies the problem.

To do what you suggest is asuming that I can install both versions first.

I can't, what ever version I have initially installed gets overwitten by the other version I install after that.

So, I can get to the stage of having two versions to choose from as I only get one version - the latter one I install.
