starting problems with audacity on ubuntu studio

Post by kobra196 » Tue Jun 28, 2016 11:38 am

hi,

I'm starting with audacity as a noob user and I have the software setup but there's a problem with no audio coming from the speakers while recording the line-in (keyboard).. there is an option ' software playthrough' but toggling this doesnt help much. It's my first encounter with audacity and audio production apart from an online tool called soundation, so any help is appreciated

Please give us some information about your exact version of Ubuntu Studio and information about your Audacity version - see the pink panel at the top of the page.

What is the make and model number of the keyboard, and where you are connecting from on the keyboard? Can you record from it successfully? If not, that is the problem you have to solve. What recording device are you choosing in Audacity's Device Toolbar? Normally you would choose the "default" device after making the line-in the default device in PulseAudio Volume Control.

If you don't have PulseAudio Volume Control, I recommend installing it.

Also do you really have a blue line-in for strong signals separate from the mic input? If not you will probably record a mono or distorted signal by connecting to the mic in. In that case, consider buying a USB interface that has a proper stereo line-in.

If you do have a separate line-in and you can make software playthrough work, it will still be delayed playthrough. It would be better to double the keyboard output with an adaptor and connect headphones to one of the adaptor outputs.

Thanks gale, I overlooked specifying the default playback device... now I can play, listen and record at the same time.. then next problem occuring is that recording halts randomly after a few minutes.. I ll try fiddling with the format a bit, its now on 32 bit

next werid thing occuring with this studio is that the floppy drive wont mount. I wanted to try to zip some old floppy games but the system wont access the floppy drive.. Ive added the user to the /etc/group and used sudo modprobe floppy, but then mount with the gui or cli mount command wont do the trick. Any tips?

output from lsmod: floppy 73728 0
/etc/fstab has /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

but sudo mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
gives mount: /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device

Also if you are choosing the "default" recording device in Device Toolbar you could try choosing the hw (0.x) recording device instead, which would access the line-in directly instead of through pulse.

You may have to then select the correct input in ALSAmixer.

Please contact Ubuntu support for problems in their operating systems.
