I need to split a MP3 file into tracks

Post by relztrah » Sat Apr 09, 2016 2:41 am

I'm somehow making this way too hard on myself. I have an MP3 file that I want to split into tracks so that I can listen to them in the car. I'm able to open the file and create one track, but then how do I create the second, third and so forth tracks? I seem to be simply renaming the first track.

When I use Tracks>New Track I have what is shown in the attachment.

I don't need to edit out noise or have any effects. Just split the file into 3 or 4 tracks of about 15 minutes each. I'm using Audacity 2.0.5 with Puppy Linux 6.0, Tahrpup.

Delete all the blank tracks.

Place a label at the beginning of each song or segment.

http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/label_tracks.html

File > Export Multiple.

Audacity will break up your presentation at the label points. Don't forget to place a label at the first song.

I don't know that I would use Project Sample Rate of 22500 (lower left). That will sound like muffled FM radio. Much better the Audacity default 44100 (Music CD) or 48000 that video uses.

If you change it higher, re-import your music fresh at the new rate.

Thank you for your help. I clicked on 15:00 and created track 1. Then I click on 30:00 to create track 2 and the MP3 starts to play. So I'm doing something wrong there.

There are no songs; it is a lecture. So if I can simply split it into 15 minute tracks, that's what I want to do.

I appreciate your help.

Click in the blue waves then CTRL + B to create a label. Don't click in the Timeline above the blue waves because that plays the audio from that point. Then File > Export Multiple... .

Note that you are degrading the MP3's by doing this, because MP3 is lossy and Audacity must re-encode the file. You should be using mp3split or similar: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/MP3#re-encode.
