[Fedora 23] Audacity 2.1.2 crashes on startup

I just updated to Audacity 2.1.2 (64 bits) today and now it crashes when i try to run it. I tried downgrading to 2.1.1 and it started up, but whenever i tried to record it crashed. Audacity often freezes for me when starting/stopping recording/playing audio, but i've never had this issue before.

Audacity only supplies source code for Linux. I'm guessing that you installed a binary package, in which case the most likely problem is that there is a problem with the package, such as a missing dependency. Audacity often freezes for me when starting/stopping recording/playing audio

Unless you are recording sounds that are playing on your computer, the usual fix for that is to bypass PulseAudio by selecting the appropriate "hw" options as the recording and playback devices in the device toolbar.

Thanks for the reply. That's a separate issue that a previous packaging of Audacity had with the updated soundtouch package, the new package fixes the soundtouch issue. I've used the devices toolbar in the past but i don't think that changed the freezing issue, i'll look into it when i get Audacity working again though

Those errors are probably due to building against unsupported (too late) system FFmpeg. Audacity does not support greater than FFmpeg 2.3: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/fa ... html#linff.

If you don't want FFmpeg support, configure Audacity --without-ffmpeg. Sometimes you can still build with unsupported (too late) system FFmpeg if you configure Audacity using --disable-dynamic-loading. However that never worked for me - exports using FFmpeg would usually error. The best answer is to self-build FFmpeg 2.3.

If you build our sources you will still be liable to receive the playback or recording freeze if you use the pulse or default devices. See also How to debug PulseAudio problems.

I tried both those options today without success (--without-ffmpeg and --disable-dynamic-loading), i'll try again tomorrow and post the results. I downgraded to 2.1.1 today which starts fine, the trick seems to be setting both devices, both input and output. Before i'd only set one or the other. I recorded for several hours without any freezes today

I'll try building FFmpeg 2.3 tomorrow as well and see if that solves things.

By the way, earlati says in http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 48&t=90537 that the "audacity-freeworld" package of 2.1.2 launches if run as root.

I just tried running it as root and it didn't work for me, so i've downgraded back to 2.1.1 again.
