Audacity playback gives static crackling? [SOLVED]

I recorded a voice over which sounds okay through a variety of software.
However, audacity (2.1.2) on Ubuntu 15.04 gives me an awful crackling, clicking, popping, like it is playing antique vinyl.

Any clue?

(Running Ubuntu 15.04, Audacity 2.1.2)

if you are using the "pulse" or "default" playback device in Audacity's Device Toolbar, please see

Had already applied that setting to keep Audacity from playing too fast.

Anyways, switching to HDA Intel PCH: ALC fixed my problem.

Thanks!

Good. It is always best to say what fixes you have already tried when you post.
