mbox2 and audacity on linux

Post by MetZen » Thu Dec 12, 2013 4:43 pm

Hello,

I'm trying to run my mbox2 mini with audacity, I set it to use mbox2 and then when trying to record I get the error: Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate.

Is it possible to make it work?

and is there any other sound recording program such as pro tools or sonar for linux with mbox2 support?

running linux mint 15 with audacity 2.0.3 distribution version

Thank you!

How exactly are you doing that?

ok, I would post a picture but don't know how really, I've been looking around but seems I can't upload from my pc, so I will try and describe it to you.

I go to edit>preferences>devices and the host (¿?) I don't know if that's the correct name I have it in another language... anyway the first option says ALSA, my kernel is 3.8.0-19-generic so the mbox2 driver is included already and the led from the device is on. the second parameter is the output and the device is set to Mbox 2:USB audio (hw:1.0) and then the input or recording says the same.

I'm not sure what the problem may be, any clue is helpful.

thnak you

Because you are trying to access the device directly through ALSA (rather than via Pulse), if any other program is accessing the device then it will not be available for Audacity.
Assuming that you also have a built-in sound card, ensure that system sounds are configured to play through the on-board sound card, then log out and back in again.

thank you for your help, I guess it should work, the problem is that when in sound settings I try to configure it to work through the mbox2 digital or analog input the window closes and is not set right, is that a bug?

I'm unsure which "window" you are referring to.
The settings for host, recording input device, playback output device and number of channels to record can be set in the device toolbar, so you do not need to go into Preferences to set those.

sorry, I meant the system's sound settings.

btw, what is pulse? is that an audio host? it does not appear as an audio host here...

Just to be clear, Audacity does not explicitly support Mbox. On Windows and Mac you would need to install the required standalone Mbox drivers that are meant for third-party software before Audacity would work with it at all.

I expect Mbox and Audacity are almost untested on Linux, even with the required 3.8 or later kernel. There are no reports on the Forum one way or the other.

Linux Mint should have pulse installed. You should see an option for "pulse" in the output and input boxes in Device Toolbar.

Mbox2 should work with Ardour: https://community.ardour.org/node/1580 .
