PPA for the latest stable version?

I see that you have just released Audacity 2.0.1. I’d love to have it!

However, I use Linux, so I depend on the PPAs.

You have a PPA for the daily (unstable) releases, but an unstable release is not suitable for me.

Do you have a PPA for the latest (stable) release?

Audacity does not supply installation packages either for builds at release time, or for builds from HEAD between releases. Any such packages are supplied by your distribution.

Also please note there are no “stable” or “beta” designations for Audacity releases any longer. The releases are what most users should obtain and will always aspire to have qualities associated with a “stable”, mainstream release. Builds between releases are alpha, and could at times be very “unstable” if they contain experimental features.

If you are on Ubuntu and install the “2.0.1+svn20120701+r7240-0” PPA from https://launchpad.net/~audacity-team/+archive/daily, it should be identical from a functional code perspective to 2.0.1 release. Nothing has changed yet, except possibly “About Audacity” might say 2.0.2-alpha.

If you require 2.0.1 release as we (not your distribution) made it, then you will have to compile the source tarball from http://audacityteam.org/download/source using these instructions, or install the Windows 2.0.1 exe under WINE.

Thanks, Gale. I’ve added your daily PPA and installed Audacity — you’re right, it does say “2.0.2-alpha-Jul 1 2012”.

However, does this mean I’ll start to get the daily builds including alpha builds? I really need to stick with stable releases.

Should I rather compile using your instructions? I have never compiled from source, so it’s a little daunting for me.

(I’d rather avoid WINE.)

Yes it does, but what you can do is to temporarily comment out (or otherwise disable) the PPA from your sources list until such time as there is a new release version, then re-enable it to update to the new release (or first, post release alpha).

Thanks, I’ll do that.

However, I’ll need to know as soon as a new version of Audacity is released. I discovered this release by accident; how would I normally be notified if I don’t have a current PPA? (The same question would apply if I compiled the source tarball as per your other instructions.)

Enter your e-mail address at the bottom of this page and you will be e-mailed when a new release version is available: http://audacityteam.org/

New releases are announced on this forum and on the Audacity home page (http://audacityteam.org/)

Thank, you. Done!
