Please state:
 • which version of Linux you are using,
 • the exact three-section version number of Audacity from Help menu > About Audacity,

Audacity 1.2.x and 1.3.x are obsolete and no longer supported. If you still have those versions, please upgrade (see https://www.audacityteam.org/download/).
The old forums for those versions are now closed, but you can still read the archives of the 1.2.x and 1.3.x forums.

I found that the XML file contains a comma instead of the period sign as a decimal separator
I also noticed, but that should not be a problem. The project opens correctly for me and my system uses a dot as the decimal separator.

Is there a debugging mode that could be of help?
There's not much debug information in release builds.
If you launch Audacity from a terminal window you will see some debug info. To launch Audacity from a Terminal window, just enter the command name:

Code: Select all

audacity
Don't be alarmed by a large number of warnings during start-up. Most of them are due to platform differences and are harmless.
Probably best if you copy and paste all of the Terminal output in your reply, and put it in

tags.

Sorry for the late reply, I got too busy with other stuff.

The following output is left when I open Audacity, then try to open a project file and then I abort the process by pressing Ctrl+C in the terminal:

I hope there's some interesting debugging info in there.

Thanks for the help!

Sorry, I'm still no wiser as to what the problem may be.

Something you could try is launching Audacity from the command line, and passing a file name as an argument.

I'd suggest that you use the project that you posted earlier as I've confirmed that it opens correctly.
Extract that project into a convenient folder, and also put a WAV file into that folder (for comparison).
First try the WAV file using the command:

Code: Select all

audacity full-path-to-wav-file
Example:

Code: Select all

audacity /home/nicemicro/Documents/testfile.wav
Then try the same again with the project file:
Example:

Code: Select all

audacity /home/nicemicro/Documents/testproject.aup

From ~/.audacity-data/ move these three files to your Desktop (or any other convenient location):
On restarting Audacity, you should see the welcome message.
Then try saving and opening a project.
I moved the three files somewhere else.
I opened Audacity, recorded a new project, saved it.
When I try to open it, I get the same error as before.

Are you also using Arch Linux with Audacity 2.3.3 installed it from the community repository?

I think I have the US, Hungarian and Korean locales generated. So, yeah, the en_GB local is not there, but why on earth Audacity wants that? Can that be related to the load issue? The program starts, I can import a wavefile, edit it and export it without no problem, I just can't load saved projects.
I was just scanning through this thread, and I don't see if you ever said what language Audacity is using.
This could possibly be relevant if something is being translated that shouldn't be translated.

WOW! This was the problem for some reason.
The language setting was "System". If I change it to "English", it still doesn't work. If I set it to Hungarian or Korean, I can finally open a project file! Even if I set it to Dutch. Which I don't have installed.
Now I changed it back to English. And it still works?
Then I close Audacity, start again and try to load a project? Now it fails again.
Set to Hungarian, close the program, start again, load a project. Works.
Set to Korean, close the program, start again, load a project. Works.
Set to Dutch, close the program, start again, load a project. Fail.
Set to "System", close the program, start again, load a project. Fail.

So it seems like Audacity works with Hungarian and Korean settings, but not in English? Even though I have the US locale generated.

So next step, I went end edited my /etc/locale.gen file and uncommented en_GB.UTF-8, saved the file and ran sudo locale-gen.
Now then I tried the following:
Set to Hungarian, close the program, start again, load a project. Works.
Set to English, close the program, start again, load a project. Works.
Set to System, close the program, start again, load a project. Works.

It seems to me that the problem was me only having en_US locales generated, but Audacity wanted to go with en_GB?
Now Audacity works again, but I still have no idea how come.
Now that we concluded this investigation, do you think I should open a bug report for it so it gets investigated?

I think a bug report would only be investigated if we can provide steps to reproduce the issue.

I don't want to break my system, but I can try things out in a virtual machine (Virtualbox).
What do you think I would need to do to reproduce the problem?

What do you think I would need to do to reproduce the problem?
So in my case, when I installed my Arch Linux, I uncommented the following lines in the /etc/locale.gen file:

Code: Select all

en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
hu_HU.UTF-8 UTF-8
ko_KR.UTF-8 UTF-8
and then I ran the command locale-gen, which only generated locales for these three languages. Then I set up my locale.conf:

Code: Select all

LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC=hu_HU.UTF-8
LC_TIME=hu_HU.UTF-8
LC_MONETARY=hu_HU.UTF-8
LC_PAPER=hu_HU.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=hu_HU.UTF-8
So, when my system launches, US English is the default language, as far as I understand, but uses the Hungarian formats for numbers, time, etc.

In this case, when I start Audacity set to English, or any language I didn't specify in my locale.gen, the opening of the projects don't seem to work. It worked when I switched to Korean or Hungarian. It seems to me that when it's set to English, it wants to use the UK locale, which wasn't installed. When I added en_GB.UTF-8 UTF-8 to my locale-gen and generated the locales again, it started to work with English.

Now to ensure all's well, I recorded a new project when set to English and saved a new project, switched to Espanol (Spanish) and closed Audacity. When I try to open the project that way, it doesn't work. Switch it back to English, and it works again. So my guess, that you could reproduce this error with any two languages, if you have one that is not installed (not in locale.gen when running locale-gen), and the other is installed.

All in all, the bug seems to be twofold:
(1) Audacity runs and uses languages properly that are not installed as locales on the OS, but fails to open a project
(2) When language is set to "system", even though the OS sets it to US English, Audacity tries to go with the GB English locale, and if that's not installed the bug in (1) happens.

I've tested on Debian with Audacity 2.3.3 and these locale settings:

Code: Select all

LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC=hu_HU.utf8
LC_TIME=hu_HU.utf8
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY=hu_HU.utf8
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER=hu_HU.utf8
LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT=hu_HU.utf8
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

and I'm not able to reproduce the problem. :?
