Would I be well advised to uninstall this Audacity and reinstall? Shouldn't that solve the problem.
Would I loose my LAME application or is it safe from the uninstall action of Audacity. I am working on a music project that can't go forward until this is resolved. (I have tried without success the recommendations previously, for which I am grateful.) Thanks for your recommendation relative to this post.

Re-installing will not help. But it wouldn't hurt to install the latest Audacity.

It may help to reset the Audacity preferences. First, quit Audacity, Then, in the Finder, click on the Go menu, select Go to folder, then type this in the box:

~/Library/Application Support/audacity

then click Go.

In the audacity folder, trash the file "audacity.cfg". This resets everything. (Note that simply re-installing Audacity does not do this reset).

Start Audacity, and in the new, empty, untitled project window, do Generate > Chirp and accept the defaults.

Does that play back?
