Hi there,
Before I upgrade my Mac's OS to Sierra I wanted to first check in to see if it's compatible with Audacity please? last time I downloaded El Capitan, I couldn't use Audacity until a few upgrades later, which was terrible for my business!!

and the exact three-section version number of Audacity from "Audacity menu > About Audacity".
Audacity 1.2.x and 1.3.x are obsolete and no longer supported. If you still have those versions, please upgrade at https://www.audacityteam.org/download/.
The old forums for those versions are now closed, but you can still read the archives of the 1.2.x and 1.3.x forums.

As you can see from our system requirements http://www.audacityteam.org/download/mac/#sysreq Sierra is supported in the current Audacity 2.1.2 release.
If you can be specific about what the Audacity problems were, we could advise you better.
Or you can look at the 2.1.2 Release Notes.

Thank you Gale. I haven't downloaded the new Sierra yet, so no problems to report. Just wanted to check in first before I did to ensure it's compatible with Audacity. 2.1.2.

I meant, what the problems were that you encountered in Audacity until later El Capitan. For example, USB audio was problematic in early El Capitan, but that did not only affect Audacity.
Audacity 2.1.2 is not flawless on any version of macOS. A lot of bugs were fixed in 2.1.2 but new ones came in because we had to update to a later version of the toolkit that provides our user interface.
