And by extension, if you have the wrong one, you're only option is buy a new interface, find a different machine or roll your machine back to the older system.
Not having Time Machine or a good backup can be a very serious problem.

For the Saffire 6 USB 1.1 you need to wait for Focusrite to iron out the wrinkles. Or for Apple to get their act together and test some old devices...
No need for a new device if you can wait.

Hi Koz!
Thanks for all this amazing support!!
Time different here in NZ didn't allow for me to do more. But I'll be tackling it all again with the next hour and feed back to you what I find.
Thanks again!!

Did the sound test from the MBP built-in microphone work? I have done sound jobs with the built-in. Unlike Windows laptops, it's not trash.

Hi Koz,
Thanks so much for all your great support!!
I've just uploaded a clip for you as requested. I've also taken a screen shot of the drive space on my computer - I think we have a problem here Houston!
I generally move all my files onto an external hard drive and will do so again now. I also make back ups to an external hard drive - which I did last night again. So I'll start freeing up space on my hard drive as much as possible now.
My hard drive is also a solid state.
I've also just seen that mine is a Sapphire USB 1.1, which is also why it's not working...
Ok, so going to free up space now and any additional info is always welcome!

Thanks!
Bonita

So the built in part works perfectly... sound not great obviously, but it's not stuttering...

Were you on Yosemite (10.10) before? If you can download the Yosemite installer, it's as simple as creating a new partition in Disk Utility, and installing Yosemite in that partition. Startup Disk in System Preferences will let you choose whether to boot to Yosemite or El Capitan.
Apple will probably make it hard to find old installers online, but try opening App Store, clicking "Purchases" and look for Yosemite (or whatever your previous Mac version was) there.

No problem here. Your screen shot shows the size of the system folder, not the HD.
To show the size of the HD, select your HD on the desktop and hit command-i. Or use the Finder menu "Get info".

Check first.

It's not only your Focusrite. A lot of USB 1.1 audio interfaces seem to have the same problem with El Capitan, the Tascam US144, fi.

Backups and free space are always welcome.

You just went through nine time zones (plus yours) of forum elves thinking of possible problems and you have two likely prospects.
But only one of them is immediately solvable.
