Sorry, skipped a bit, trying to concentrate on one or two test cases.
Gale Andrews wrote:Did you delete audacity.cfg? If not, please quit Audacity then do so.
I quit Audacity between most tests, but not in all tests.

Imports, but plays way too fast.
Gale Andrews wrote:How long is it supposed to be? The version I obtained was just over 48 seconds long in VLC and that's its length after importing into Audacity and that is how long it takes to play there.
That is the correct length. When imported in Audacity 2.1.1 alpha on my system, it's zero seconds, according to the numbers below the wave form. It plays in under a second. Pic:

Gale Andrews wrote:Is that with all files or just the misbehaving ones?
That's with all the misbehaving files. MP3, wav and any other AUDIO file works. I haven't been able to find any VIDEO file that imports audio into Audacity.

It's not really a biggy, I never import video files into Audacity that way. It's just that I'm baffled, since there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with these files. And some of them I've been using as test files for a very long time.

And Audacity 2.1.0 and 2.1.1. alpha seem to be very well behaved on my system. I haven't really turned up any problem in testing, apart from a very minor graphical glitch...

Could something like Flip4Mac interfere with ffmpeg or lame?

Cyrano, to save going round in circles, please delete audacity.cfg after quitting Audacity. I think you may have corrupted or altered settings which are the cause of this. Open Finder, Go > Go to Folder and type:

Code: Select all

~/Library/Application Support/audacity/
Now you can delete audacity.cfg. If you don't want to do that, can you attach that file?

16:11:47: Open(/Users/wim/Desktop/Test files audio & video/TEST.TOOL.Ac3 Dolby Digital 5.1Ch Sound Test.avi) succeeded
And there is what I said was the problem - libmad is opening the file. That doesn't make Audacity crash for me, but if you are adding plugins using Effect > More... Audacity could crash in that session at any time. We still have to solve that .

Here is what should happen with that AVI, FFmpeg (libav) attempts the file before other importers:

Code: Select all

17:36:13: FFmpeg libraries loaded successfully.
17:36:20: File name is /Users/gale/Downloads/TEST.TOOL.Ac3 Dolby Digital 5.1Ch Sound Test.avi

TEST.m4a
That also imports fine for me.
cyrano wrote:Could something like Flip4Mac interfere with ffmpeg or lame?
Flip4Mac as I understand it would make the QuickTime importer in Audacity take WMA/WMV files. So I don't think it's relevant.

Have you installed Flip4Mac or other audio-related software just before this started happening?

Deleting audacity.cfg sorted it. All files import audio. Even the big ones. I was somehow assuming quitting the app was enough. Yes, I'm dense

Thanks, Gale!

I had already deleted flip4mac, as I'm trouwbleshooting something else. Black screen in all browsers when streaming video after approx. 25 mins. Sound goes on, picture stops...
