File won't load using control-click>Open With

Post by sgallaghe » Fri Sep 13, 2013 6:38 pm

I often use control-click>Open With on a .m4a file in my iTunes Music folder to have Audacity open the file so I can take a look at it. Audacity gets launched and the file is loaded and displayed.

I updated to 2.0.4 a few days ago and when I do the same thing, Audacity launches but the file doesn't load or get displayed.

This happens on both my iMac with 10.6.8 and my MacBook Pro running 10.7.5.

2.0.3 works fine, 2.0.4 doesn't so I'm staying with the older version for now.

OSX 10.6.8, Audacity 2.0.4 from .dmg

An m4a file will not open in Audacity unless a valid FFMpeg is found. If you drag the file out of iTunes and then try, does it open? It won't leave iTunes if it's a protected music file.

I don't know that a different FMpeg is needed, but it's worth installing the latest one.

Did iTunes go through an upgrade between then and now? I had to do an iTunes upgrade to make my movie downloads work and I have different iTunes on my different machines.

The Mac people have had permissions problems.

Go > Utilities > Disk Utilities > select your system drive > Repair Permissions.

Let's start there.

I already repaired permissions and re-installed FFmeg before I made my original post.

Still using iTunes 10.7 as I have for quite a while. Apple really screwed things up with 11.0.

What I'm asking Audacity to view are the actual .m4a music files within my iTunes Music folder, in my case they're all Apple Lossless.

But the real question remains, I've used the same procedure hundreds of times with many versions of Audacity up until 2.0.3. I usually do it to check out the differences between the original and remastered version of the same song. It works in 2.0.3 and not in 2.0.4. I've tried it on two different Mac computers (iMac and MacBook Pro) running two different versions of OSX (10.6.8 and 10.7.5)

The same version of FFmpeg (0.6.2) is needed for 2.0.4 as 2.0.3.

I can reproduce the "Open with" problem - another user mentioned it to me yesterday. Audacity makes no attempt to import the file according to the log.

I would guess the Modules dialogue which is new to 2.0.4 could be the cause, but Audacity still imports files on "Open with" on Windows and Linux even if the presence of a module makes the dialogue appear. I'll confirm later if the modules dialogue is the cause.

I assume you are aware you can drag the files into the Audacity window?

2.0.4 is prone to crash when importing files on some machines, so you may be better with 2.0.3 for now in any case.
