Audacity 2.0.4 still crashes

I tried to open a file with audacity-macosx-ub-revert-r12334-2.0.4, and it crashed. I'm on a MacBook running OS 10.7.5. Here's the crash report:

Then I reopened Audacity (latest build of 2.0.4), new file, added tracks, and tried to import a file (with no accents or strange characters in the name). Here's the crash report

As I just pointed out that patched build is not a fix, it just sets the bug incidence back to where it was. The ƒ is no doubt the problem - did you create it with Option - f ?

Can you quit 2.0.4, then download 1.3.10: http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/au ... 1.3.10.zip ?

Put your ƒ in the name of the folder you run Audacity 1.3.10 from. Then start 1.3.10 and drag some files in. Please post the crash report if it crashes.

I downloaded 1.3.10... and I think I'm in love! I started small, using the new (old) version to create a file that was just 10 seconds of sine wave, then saving it (or, more precisely, exporting it as a wav file). Audacity 1.3.10 was able to open the file when it was dragged and dropped on it. I got bolder -- I imported wav and mp3 files. They worked! It even OPENED them from the File menu, with no import needed! It DIDN'T CRASH!! Every item in the "Generate" menu worked!

I tried it first from a copy just as it came. Then I copied the whole folder, added ƒ (Option-f) to the title, and ran that program. Worked like a charm! Then I opened AND imported files from a folder (labeled ƒ) within a folder (labeled ƒ) within a folder (labeled ƒ) -- and it STILL worked!! So, with this version at least, the Command-f addition does not seem to make any difference, no matter where it is located (program folder, file folder, or both). I even opened wav files whose titles were long strings (20+ characters) of mixed letters, numbers, spaces, and hyphens. Still worked!

Now... how to get 2.0.4 to behave as nicely, along with its newer bells and whistles.

I'll be glad to keep testing anything you'd like to suggest! Again, I'm on a MacBook running OS10.7.5.

Thanks again, Dave. The problem is not with long strings or mixed letters and numbers but with accented letters like é or symbols like ♪ (anything other than the Latin a to z alphabet).

If you're still willing, can you repeat your steps adding that ƒ into the Audacity folder, into the names of the imported files or wherever you like, using 1.3.11 http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/au ... 1.3.11.zip ? I think that 1.3.11 may crash. I hope it does because it will really help to know in which release this problem started.

If 1.3.11 crashes on import, please post the crash report for it then without rebooting, try the steps again in 1.3.10.

I was curious, so I went ahead and downloaded 1.3.11. It started with no problem (except that it let me know that ffmpeg couldn't load, which was expected.) It opened a wav file, and imported it as well. I quit and added ƒ (Option-f) to the Audacity folder name, then started it again. It was able to open and import sounds that were in a folder with ƒ at the end, with no problem. So that version doesn't seem to have a problem with the character ƒ, anyway.

Thanks for testing. Several people (except for one) have said that 1.3.11 consistently crashes (but 1.3.10 doesn't) when importing files that have accented characters in the filename or folder path.

It could be you will have to repeat your experiment in 1.3.11 a few times. This is an intermittent bug, after all.

You can get the versions after 1.3.11 by incrementing the number in the link.

Yesterday, I tried the latest nightly download of Audacity 2.0.5 for Mac. It has the same bug: crashes if one tries to import a sound file. Note that the name of the file I tried does not have an accent or Umlaut, and nor does any folder in the tree of folders in which it is situated.

The latest 2.0.5 alpha build does not have Gale's patch. Stick with Gale's patched version.
A decision has not yet been taken on if, when and how this fix will be rolled out to users.

Well, here are the results of a quick trial of Audacity 2.0.5-alpha-Sep 10 2013 with an aiff file and an mp3 file on a Mac mini (late 2012) with OS 10.8.4:

With both audio files, importing the file worked smoothly without crash. Starting Audacity and using File/Open worked equally well. Dragging the file to the Audacity icon while Audacity was not running started Audacity but did not load the audio — but did not induce a crash either.

Looks like success, doesn't it?
