Audacity quits when trying to import mp3 files

Brand new member; first post here.

I have searched for an answer to my problem until my fingers started to bleed from al the typing (OK, not quite) and eventually decided my best bet might be to join the forum and see if anyone can help me.

When I try to import mp3 files to edit, I will get the message that Audacity quit unexpectedly with the option to ignore, relaunch or send report to Apple. I saw on other posts where the member was directed to paste their crash report into their post, so I that's what I tried to do. Not sure if I did something wrong, but I couldn't seem to get my report into a scroll window like some others that I saw.

Anyone have this happen to them? Solution?

The solution is to surround the listing with the code tags from the composition options at the top of the text entry window. You can do it manually, too. Bracket, the word "code", bracket, etc.

Where are these sound files coming from?

Thanks for the report.

There is no need to attach the MP3.

It's a known problem, caused by non-English characters in the file name, or in the name of a folder the file is in, or something else you did in OS X with a non-English character has triggered the issue. Once the problem has started, files which have only English characters or path names will still crash on import.

There is no solution right now, other than reboot and don't use non-English characters, or perhaps use an old Audacity Beta version like 1.3.9 (but that isn't recommended for other reasons).

I see several mentions of HIToolbox -- Human Interface Toolbox. That's a developer system and I don't know that it's intended for the casual user. What else is running on your machine? How many other applications are running and have their icon's ticked at the bottom of your desktop (or wherever you put it)?

When was the last time you restarted your Mac and ran Permission Repair?

The only thing open right now is Safari and Outlook.

I have no idea what HI Toolbox, let alone tried to use it. Is there a way to disable it or get rid of it?

After doing much searching last night, I ran permission repair and restarted the computer. Unfortunately, the problem did not go away.

It's Audacity that's making calls to HIToolbox.

I've been bitten by this bug and repairing permissions does not clear it. Restarting does not clear it. Initializing preferences does not clear it. The bug affects imports of all file types (well, at least MP3, AIF and FLAC). The file can have a perfectly sane file name with no special characters and no unicode characters.

In my case I've gone back to 2.0.3 when I need to import files into a project. If I need or want 2.0.4 features I save the project and open it in 2.0.4.

AFAICT this is a very deep and subtle bug.

Accented or Unicode characters. Essentially, anything other than a-z (upper or lower case) or numbers 0 to 9.

There is some evidence that only certain Unicode characters trigger it (those in Latin Extended B ) but I don't regard that as completely reliable.

It eventually does for me, even if two or three reboots are needed.

This is odd because 2.0.3 has exactly the same problem for me (and squast is using 2.0.3). 1.3.9 is the latest version so far that I think I can say does not have this issue for me. If I launch 1.3.9 instead of 2.0.3 or 2.0.4, the crashes stop, even without rebooting.

This morning I found a copy of 1.3.9 to download. Running as smoothly as you could want. I have coded 50+ songs with no issues.
