Re: AIFF files will not play on iPod, will on iTunes
I generated a 4 minute chirp tone in Audacity then created eight 30-second tracks from it and exported multiple to AIFF. I named the files in the labels
01 a
02 b
03 c
04 d
05 e
06 f
07 g
08 h
I did not add metadata, but there is no way at present to export multiple without Audacity adding Track Title and Track Number metadata. The files were listed (and played) in play order in iTunes "Songs" tab if if I sorted the list by Name or Artist.
Then I repeated the export multiple but added artist names in reverse alphabetical order starting with "z", then "y" for the next song, "x" for the next song and so on. On the Songs tab the files are then not in play order if I sort by Artist but they are in play order if I sort by Name.
The "Album" tab still shows individual songs that I added to an album as individual albums but I make no pretence to understand iTunes.
If your iTunes out-of-order issue is something not covered above, please give an exact list of numbered steps (fully written out) to reproduce the problem, including the exact value that you added for each exact tag in Audacity's Metadata Editor.

This is how you support your product?waxcylinder wrote:Are you really sure it's worth the effort - you do realize that you can buy the CD of Tommy quite cheaply these days (Amazon US $8.49, Amazon UK £5.94) - especially as your source material is inherently noisy tapeaudio_pete wrote:I began with a personal project to transfer 3 cassette tapes to my iPod.
I completed part of that task yesterday when I moved Tommy by the Who to my iPod.
Actually, Audacity was fairly quick and easy.
If it could export an aiff file that would play on my iPod ,
I would have been done a week ago and
would have never posted here.
However,
not every record made it to digital,
not every digital copy received the loving care Tommy did,
I made a copy of Blueberry Hill from a 78 record
And like it better than my copy from a newer CD.
I saw Monty Python in concert.
At the end of the show
when we were clapping for more,
they projected a slide to the audience.
The words escape me now,
but I think they are somehow appropo.

I agree that the original media may often be preferable to CD remasters in terms of actual audio quality (media imperfections aside).audio_pete wrote:This is how you support your product?waxcylinder wrote:Are you really sure it's worth the effort - you do realize that you can buy the CD of Tommy quite cheaply these days (Amazon US $8.49, Amazon UK £5.94) - especially as your source material is inherently noisy tapeaudio_pete wrote:I began with a personal project to transfer 3 cassette tapes to my iPod.

As Steve said we have been testing this (and are still doing so), but only one of us has a couple of iPods and is on Mac. I also tried out your out-of-order problem.
Please do try to have a quick look at http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 27#p218927 and answer the questions there. If we don't find a problem then we certainly can't take it further without your input on those questions.

Re: AIFF files will not play on iPod, will on iTunes
Need to finish my bluegrass tape, get it on my iPod.
Will try your tests as soon as I have time.
I was hoping you had someone who could reproduce my test.
Not sure about metadata now.
Tommy had song names on point labels, artist was the Who on all.
Split with numbers, seemed to work perfectly, no manual intervention needed.
Tried to do same for Crusin, but did not work (after coming out of Amedeus).
Added artist and track in iTunes. Forgot to split with numbers.
May be just as easy to add everything in iTunes .
Will see what happens with Bluegrass.

When your iPod fails to play a song, does it crash back to:
Music
Extras
Clock

Re: AIFF files will not play on iPod, will on iTunes
Does not crash back
but does not play any song.
I seem to get away with running from 1 to 23 and back to 1 again one time.
That is, song titles flash by no music played.
But if I try it twice then older albums that have no problems
do not play either.
So I push center and top which resets the iPod,
the apple logo shows up.
and when it is done, music can be played again.
My fantasy is that the iPod has a very simple system.
If it does not see a file end marker (whatever that is)
it gets confused, generates an error
but as no error handling coding.
It is used to iTunes filtering out bad and dishing out pure pablum.

Oh, cool. I didn't know it would do that. I have to try it. Did somebody from the Apple Genius bar tell you that?So I push center and top which resets the iPod
When you plug your iPod into your Mac, does it mount on the desktop? Mine does. Does it pass Disk Utility Verification? I dropped mine a while back and it sometimes has repair problems.

Well actually yes ...audio_pete wrote:This is how you support your product?waxcylinder wrote:Are you really sure it's worth the effort - you do realize that you can buy the CD of Tommy quite cheaply these days (Amazon US $8.49, Amazon UK £5.94) - especially as your source material is inherently noisy tapeaudio_pete wrote:I began with a personal project to transfer 3 cassette tapes to my iPod.

I always believe in using the right tool for the job - after once in my teens using one of my dad's big files as a hammer and ended up with a blue thumbnail for months
When I started on my LP conversions, which started when I bought my first iPod, I had hundreds to do - so I took a pragmatic view and used Audacity (and ClickRepair) for those that were either unavailable on CD or still expensive on CD. Those that cost a fiver or less I bought the CDs as a way of getting the job done quickly. My one mistake was buying Emmylou Harris' Luxury Liner where the CD had been so horribly "remastered" and made "louder" losing Emmylou in the mush of instruments - in that case I went back and converted the LP, with much better results.

I quite agree with your advice.
I just grabbed up the Rolling Stones Hot Rocks,
$6.99 on iTunes. My vinyl project goes back to the end of the line.
These three tapes are just prelims before the main event.
I found your first response succinct to the point of ambiguity.
