Re: AIFF files will not play on iPod, will on iTunes
Here is a file "02-sjoel.aiff" id = 8242. It's the second file of an Audacity export multiple. I added metadata for each field in Metadata Editor, so that NAME (02-sjoel), AUTH (joel) and ANNO (notfixed) were even numbers of characters. Riffpad thinks this file is OK (no "junk at end of file" message because the offsets are not even numbers). Does audio_pete's old iPod play it?
Note this is only a problem with these optional NAME, AUTH and ANNO chunks, not with the ID3 chunk. iTunes does not write NAME, AUTH and ANNO. If they are already in the file because some other application wrote them, it removes them when it converts the file.

Re: AIFF files will not play on iPod, will on iTunes
It may wel be that the results of Riff-Pad are simply not trustworthy.
Perhaps, it simply looses track of the chunks if it calculates the next position on the size value alone and does not skip zero-padded bytes.
(But who knows, if the iPod does not something similar...)
If we had the right sponsor, we could experiment with our own iPods.

audio_pete, please try these three files in your iPod and tell us which, if any of them work:

Re: AIFF files will not play on iPod, will on iTunes
Actually, I am trying to know which files are which, so I know what I am testing.audio_pete wrote:Please stop trying to muddy the waters.
As far as I can tell the file called "01-s.aiff" used to be a file that did not play on iPod, hence why I am confused.
I know you are looking for an easy solution, but there are many possible variables here, export multiple (first file or subsequent file), export selection and now Robert's suggestion that the optional chunks are not zero padded. This does not seem to be true, though I agree riffpad not liking the files may be relevant.
Let's all try to help by making this as non-confusing as possible - making it completely clear in our responses exactly what file we are talking about.
There are files from Steve and me up now for you to test.

Re: AIFF files will not play on iPod, will on iTunes
These files have no metadata.tone files loaded to
http://www.sendspace.com/filegroup/t5Cx ... RO8ZFbAxRV
loaded whole file Audacity and Amadeus saved Audacity
files are very similar
both play on ipod
loaded split files Audacity and Amadeus saved Audacity
Audacity files do not play on ipod
Amadeus files do play on ipod.
NONE of the multi export aiff files PLAY on my iPod.
(As have stated before, results are quirky, 5 of 23 songs on Tommy play on my iPod)
You asked for a set of files with FULL metadata.
That would be these files.
http://www.sendspace.com/filegroup/uNl6 ... 0mUyqSy1Mg
3 multi export files raw
3 converted with iTunes
ONE of the multi export aiff files PLAYS on my iPod, the first file.
Then I tested the file Robert created with foobar2000

Re: AIFF files will not play on iPod, will on iTunes
Thanks, Steve. I'm guessing that in the "count-padding" file you increment the chunk size for AUTH by 1?steve wrote:audio_pete, please try these three files in your iPod and tell us which, if any of them work:

Re: AIFF files will not play on iPod, will on iTunes
If user does not add metadata when using Export Multiple then Audacity will write the NAME chunk only. If the user types a label with an odd number of characters instead of even, Riffpad will see the length as an odd number rather than even.Robert J. H. wrote:I have to download the old files without metadata (only track title and number) and see if there are also odd extra chunks.
Thanks for your help with this, Robert.

My iPod is oldGale Andrews wrote: Does audio_pete's old iPod play it?
but if you would buy a new one today
it would be EXACTLY like mine.
Apple has not updated the iPod classic in years.
It does not convert the file if you add it to your iTunes library.Note this is only a problem with these optional NAME, AUTH and ANNO chunks, not with the ID3 chunk. iTunes does not write NAME, AUTH and ANNO. I DO NOT WANT to convert the files with iTunes.
The attachment shows info for original file
and file added to iTunes library.
They are the same file both open with Audacity.
I did change album name to keep straight in iTunes
but iTunes did not "import" or "copy to aiff"

Re: AIFF files will not play on iPod, will on iTunes
Both "count" and "no count" files are "recognized" by iTunessteve wrote:audio_pete, please try these three files in your iPod and tell us which, if any of them work:
http://www.sendspace.com/filegroup/xI%2 ... 88mETW2kvb
and load to iTunes automatically.
"no padding" did not.
But I am not too happy with auto loading files
so I deleted them from iTunes
and put all 3 files in a folder.
I added each file to iTunes library and changed album name to keep them straight
The first album, Testaiff_count, the tone 2 song played on my iPod.
The second album Testaiff_no_count, the tone 2 song did not play
The third album, Testaiff_no_pad, the tone 2 song played on my iPod.
The second album file killed the iPod, had to reset before would play anything.
I am sure this proves that my OLD ipod is cr..
apple is cr..
amadeus, peak, foobar2000, riff-pad ..... are all cr..
and multi export aiff files from Audacity are practically perfect in every way.

Thanks for testing.

Please confirm if the above is correct and I'll consult with Gale and Koz to see if these findings concur with their test results.
