Can't record voicemail from iphone 4s to Mac via Audacity

Post by stephm » Fri Apr 05, 2013 2:17 am

I installed Audacity (version 2.0.3) to my Mac (OS X 10.6.8) from the dmg. In short, my father passed away and i retrieved voicemails from him that were in my deleted voicemails on my iphone 4s. I can't seem to find away to back them up and my phone is problematic and needs to be restored. I read an article (http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-574 ... dio-trick/) that told me i could do it with audacity. So as instructed i connected the phone and the mac via a male-to-male 3.5mm plug from microphone to microphone. however, when i pressed play on the voicemail (not speaker), nothing recorded at all. when i turned it to speaker (which i assume defeats the microphone cord), it was very faint. please help! thanks

You can split the system in half by plugging your earbuds or headphones into the iPhone and play the work. It should be loud and clear. If it's not, then you may not get very much further than that. You're making this way too complicated by needing to service the iPhone, but we'll do what we can.

The desperation method is to re-email the messages to someone that has a proven recording feature. You might even try mailing them to yourself. All the legacy mail systems would do that. It's worth a try.

Given that you got the earbuds to work, your next step is to find a slightly older Mac with a real Stereo Line-In. If it's too old, it may have a Mic-In which is a problem and if the Mac is too new, it has no analog inputs at all.

That thin circle with two black arrows is the connection you want.

So where did this fall apart? If you got all that so far, the rest is simple Audacity settings.
