Error chime when Recording

I am using Audacity to record raw narration that I edit in Audacity and spiff up in GarageBand. On the PC, Audacity is very easy to use. However, when I installed it on my Mac and tried to record with very basic settings (literally just opening it, setting it to mono, checking the input and output devices, & recording), my Mac makes an error chime two seconds after I say anything – it is that kind of chime the Mac makes when you hit an incorrect key. The only way I can silence the chime right now is to go to my system preferences and mute the alert sounds there, but obviously there is something wrong. Anybody know how to fix this? I am running Audacity 3.1.3 in Mac OS Monterey version 12.4.

Window guy here, so I don’t know about the chime. But ensure that you have given Audacity permission to access the “microphone”. See: Why do I get a flat line and no sound when I record on Mac?
