Fake app for iPhone & iPad

I would like to warn others about the fake Audacity app in the App Store. If you’re using an iPhone or iPad, please DO NOT download Audacity Audio Recorder App. I wasn’t aware and downloaded for my iPad. When I launched the app, I was forced to sign up for a subscription and unable to close the pop-up window.

In the app page, please click “Report a problem” to report this as a scam/fraud. If you have subscribed to it accidentally, you can go to https://reportaproblem.apple.com and request for a refund.

Unfortunately there are similar scams for many free apps.

Official Apple support for requesting refunds can be found here: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204084

Regarding Audacity:

  • Audacity is free software. If you are asked to pay for it, it’s fake.
  • Audacity runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux. At this time there is no version of Audacity for iPhone, iPad, or Android.

Luckily, my refund was approved by Apple

I knew something was wrong when the app kept asking for a subscription every time you launch it.

Can your team get Apple to remove the app?

Super. Glad to hear it.

I don’t think they can. It’s up to Apple what they sell from their store. I assume that if enough Apple customers complain and ask for refunds, then Apple will take it down. Similar problems exist on ebay, Google, and Microsoft Store, but sadly they take little notice of open source software developers unless the developer has the time, money, and expertise to sue them. Audacity users can help by complaining loudly to offending parties.
