Cannot adjust Recording Volume

I have a Macbook Air M1 running Big Sur 11.0.1 and am using Audacity 3.0.5
I have my Audio Technica AT-LP 120 USB turntable connected to my laptop trying to convert some vinyl to digital. When I open audacity and have the turntable connected (shows up as USB AUDIO CODEC) I cannot adjust the recording volume bar. If I switch the device from USB Audio Codec to Macbook Air Microphone I can adjust the recording volume bar just fine, but as soon as I switch it back to USB Audio Codec the bar freezes again. What am I missing? How can I adjust the recording volume to avoid clipping?

How can I adjust the recording volume to avoid clipping?

Does it clip? Digital devices arrive with the idea that someone has already set volume and it’s perfect. For example, if the analog part of a device is clipping, nothing you do to the digital system is going to change that.

There’s two Mac places to check. Apple > System Preferences > Sound, and Desktop > Go > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.

If there’s no joy there, did the turntable come with a software package or driver? Are there hidden controls behind or underneath the turntable?
