no sound input

using OSX 11.4
I am able to get sound recognized from microphone and also super usb cassette capture device in sound preference but I cannot not get Audacity v. 3.0.2 or 2.4.1 to recognize sound input. I think I have set input correctly but when I press record with sound input active, there is no sound being recorded.

Does Audacity have permission to access the “microphone”?

Where would I verify that? I am not seeking microphone access but audio from the cassette player.

Apple, somewhat confusingly, calls access to any audio input device “microphone” access.
