Mac 10.9.5 Audacity ver 2.3.3
I've downloaded the ACX check plugin and dragged the downloaded file into the audacity plugins folder, but when I try to open it, I get a message stating that "there is no application set to open the document acx check.ny". According to the plugin manager, the plugin installer is enabled. In fact, i'm getting the same message on each and every .ny file in the plugins folder.

You should probably be in Audacity 2.4.2 rather than 2.3.3. Some earlier Audacity versions had file export problems.

Once you get there, Tools > Nyquist Plugin Installer
That will install the tool for you.
After you install it, open up Analyze > Add/Remove Plugins and enable it.
It's possible to fake out ACX Check, but for the most part, it tracks with ACX's own analysis tools—and it's a lot faster.
